Crocodile Attack Claims Fisherman's Life on Lake Albert, Hoima Police Launch Investigation

A tragic incident occurred on Sunday, January 6, 2025, when a crocodile attacked and killed a fisherman on Lake Albert in Hoima District.

The victim, identified as Wathum, was fishing at the Kiryamboga landing site in Buseruka sub-county at the time of the attack.

Reports from Spice Fm 89.9 Hoima indicate that the incident happened around 9 a.m. that morning.

Wathum, a resident of Kiryamboga, was fishing when the crocodile suddenly emerged from the water and grabbed him.

Wathum screamed for help, and the sound of his cries quickly reached other nearby fishermen.

The brave fishermen rushed to his aid, managing to pull him away from the crocodile’s powerful grip. Despite their quick response, the injuries Wathum sustained were severe, and he was quickly taken to the hospital. Tragically, upon arrival at the hospital, he was pronounced dead.

The death of Wathum has left the local community in shock. Fishermen in the area are now urging the authorities to take action to ensure the safety of those working on Lake Albert.

It is not the first time that crocodiles have posed a threat to people in the area. Locals are concerned that the crocodile population in the lake may be growing, making it increasingly dangerous for fishermen and others who rely on the water for their livelihood.

Hoima District Police are investigating the incident to gather more information and determine how to prevent such attacks in the future.

Police have not yet confirmed whether the crocodile responsible for the attack has been found or removed from the area.

In a related story, the Uganda Police Force has called on citizens to work together to reduce crime in the country.

A police spokesperson urged the public to report criminals to the authorities to help improve security. The police stressed that they cannot be everywhere, so it is crucial for communities to stay vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement.

The police also issued a warning to boda-boda riders, who have been blamed for many road accidents in Uganda.

The force has urged these riders to be more cautious on the roads and to follow traffic laws to avoid accidents. The police hope that by working together, they can reduce the number of accidents and crimes in the country.
