She is best known for being the wife of Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly called Bobi Wine, who is a famous musician and former presidential candidate in Uganda.
While Bobi Wine has been in the spotlight for his political career, Barbie’s work in the fields of education, women's rights, and social justice has also made her a prominent figure in Uganda.
Born on September 7, 1984, in Ntungamo District in southwestern Uganda, Barbie comes from a family committed to making a difference.
Her parents, Dr. Gershom and Joy Kagaju, are both well-respected individuals in their community. Barbie attended St. Helen's Primary School in Nyamitanga, Mbarara, and then moved on to Bweranyangi Girls' Senior Secondary School in Bushenyi for her secondary education.
After finishing school, she pursued a degree in Social Work and Social Administration at Makerere University, one of Uganda’s leading institutions.
Barbie’s passion for human rights led her to further her education by earning a Master’s degree in Human Rights from the University of London in 2021.
With her qualifications, Barbie has become a strong advocate for social justice, especially in the areas of women’s rights and education.
In 2013, Barbie founded Caring Hearts Uganda, a non-governmental organization focused on supporting adolescent girls and raising awareness about HIV/AIDS.
The NGO works to improve menstrual hygiene and provide educational resources to marginalized communities, especially to internally displaced children.
Barbie’s dedication to these causes has made a significant impact in Uganda, as her work continues to improve the lives of young people in underserved areas.
Barbie is also an accomplished author. In 2012, she published Golden Memories of a Village Belle, a book that reflects on her life growing up in Uganda.
The book has touched the hearts of many readers, especially those who can relate to her experiences. Through her writing, Barbie shares her personal journey and provides inspiration to others who may come from humble beginnings.
Barbie’s personal life is just as inspiring as her professional one. She met Bobi Wine during her high school years, while he was studying Music, Dance, and Drama at Makerere University.
After years of building a strong relationship, the two married in August 2011 at Rubaga Cathedral in Kampala.
The couple is blessed with four children: Solomon Kampala, Shalom Namagembe, Mbogo Shadrack, and Nakayi Suubi.
They live in Magere Village, Wakiso District, where they continue to lead a life dedicated to family and social change.
Barbie Kyagulanyi’s work and achievements show that she is more than just the wife of a famous politician. She is a dedicated mother, an inspiring author, and a passionate activist who has made a real difference in her community.
