Traffic Disruptions Expected in Kampala as AU Summit Approaches

Kampala is getting ready for a big event – the African Union (AU) extraordinary summit, set to take place from January 9th to 11th, 2025.

This summit will bring together more than 2,000 delegates from 49 member countries.

They will gather to discuss the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Strategy and the Recommendation Plan for 2026 to 2035.

With such an important event, the government has made preparations to ensure the summit goes smoothly.

To manage the large number of attendees and ensure safety, traffic will be controlled in many areas. Several roads will be closed or have diversions.

The summit will be held at Speke Resort Munyonyo, and it is expected that delegates will be traveling from Entebbe International Airport to the venue via the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway.

This road will be closely monitored, and diversions will be put in place when delegates are on the move.

According to the Traffic Police, there will be major changes to the traffic flow in areas near the summit venue. Key routes affected include:

1. Road Diversions:
Traffic will be redirected at several important points. Some of these points include Mpala, Kisubi, Kajansi Flyover, Serena-Kigo, Mutungo-Kitiko Traffic Lights, and Munyonyo Roundabout.

People who regularly use these routes should expect delays and be prepared to follow the diversions.

2. Security Checks:
Security will be a priority during the summit, and there will be a security checkpoint at Munyonyo Roundabout.

This checkpoint will ensure the safety of delegates and other individuals traveling in the area. People should expect to stop for security checks and be patient during this time.

3. Diversions for Non-Summit Traffic:
For those not attending the summit, alternative routes will be in place. Vehicles not part of the summit will be redirected to Salama Road and Buziga Road.

This will help reduce congestion on the main routes and allow the summit-related traffic to move more smoothly.

4. Changes on the Northern Bypass:
Traffic will also be affected along the Northern Bypass. There will be diversions at Busega Flyover and at the interchanges of Sentema, Nansana, and Busega.

Drivers who use the Northern Bypass should look out for these changes and follow any new traffic instructions.

5. Motorbike Restrictions:
Motorcycles, a common mode of transport in Kampala, will not be allowed access to Kajansi, Munyonyo, or the summit venue.

This restriction is likely to affect many, so motorcycle users should plan for alternative routes during this time.

With all these changes, it's important for everyone in Kampala to plan their journeys in advance. Traffic officers will be stationed at key points to help guide drivers and keep everything running smoothly.

Those traveling to Entebbe International Airport should also make sure they allow extra time to get to the airport because of potential delays caused by the traffic diversions.
