The MP was confirmed dead this afternoon at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala, where he had been admitted after his health worsened.
“This is a heartbreaking moment for all of us,” said Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP). "Honorable Ssegirinya fought a brave battle, but unfortunately, we have lost him."
Ssegirinya had been unwell for a long time, with his condition deteriorating further during the 500 days he spent in prison.
Alongside his counterpart Allan Ssewanyana, MP for Makindye West, he was accused of being involved in the Masaka Bijambiya attacks that took over 30 lives.
Despite the challenges, Ssegirinya sought medical help at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, where he showed signs of recovery.
"He was hopeful and even made plans to return to Parliament," shared a close friend.
Unfortunately, his health took another turn for the worse upon his return to Uganda, leading to his untimely death.
In a press conference at NUP's headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, Bobi Wine provided details about the funeral arrangements.
“We will hold a vigil here at the party offices today at 4 p.m. Tomorrow, he will be honored in Parliament, and prayers will be held at Mbogo Mosque in Kawempe,” Bobi Wine explained.
The body will then be taken to his home in Kawempe for another vigil before being laid to rest on Sunday in Masaka.
Although Muslim customs encourage immediate burial, Bobi Wine noted that the family requested more time to allow relatives living abroad to travel and pay their final respects.
A resident of Kawempe expressed sorrow at the loss.
“Honorable Ssegirinya was a voice for the voiceless. He always stood with us in times of need. May his soul rest in peace.”
The death of Ssegirinya Muhammad has left a void not only in Kawempe North but also in the hearts of Ugandans who admired his courage and commitment to service.
