MP Mpuuga Defends His Support for Late MP Ssegirinya Amid Criticism

MP Mathias Mpuuga, representing Nyendo-Mukungwe, has defended himself against accusations that he abandoned the late Kawempe North MP, Mohammad Ssegirinya, during his illness.

Speaking openly about the matter, Mpuuga explained that he had been supporting Ssegirinya quietly during his time at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, where he was treated for nearly four months.

Mpuuga shared that he visited Ssegirinya six times at the hospital but emphasized that he never took pictures of the visits.

"I never took pictures, unlike others who did," he said, referring to some public figures who had visited Ssegirinya and shared photos on social media.

"Some shameless people visited him just to profit from the situation," Mpuuga added.

The MP’s comments come after some people accused him of not doing enough for the late MP during his time in the hospital.

Mpuuga, however, explained that his actions were not for publicity, but out of genuine care for Ssegirinya.

He also expressed that he wanted to support Ssegirinya in a way that wasn’t about seeking attention.

This revelation has stirred discussions on social media, with many Ugandans reacting to Mpuuga’s words.

One user, Edgar, criticized Mpuuga’s timing, suggesting that the MP waited until Ssegirinya had passed away before speaking about his support.

“You waited for the fruit to be fit for consumption,” Edgar wrote, implying that Mpuuga only spoke up after Ssegirinya’s death.

Another social media user, James, expressed sadness at the fact that people often only speak well of someone after they are gone.

"It is unfortunate that most people will always have good things to say about you once you are dead," James said.

Despite the mixed reactions, Mpuuga stands by his decision not to publicize his visits. He believes that support should be sincere and not used as a tool for personal gain, especially in difficult moments like Ssegirinya’s illness.
