UPDF Soldier Ends His Life, Leaves a Note Accusing Top Officer of Mismanagement

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is mourning the death of Lieutenant Amon Ariho, who tragically ended his life after writing a detailed note to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).

Lt Ariho, who had served in the UPDF since 2013, used his final message to highlight serious problems within the military’s Engineering Brigade.

His death has raised questions about leadership and management within the UPDF.

In his note, Lt Ariho accused Major George Ogwang, the head of the central region brigade, of selfish behavior and poor management.

He described a toxic environment where engineers were not included in decision-making processes.

According to Lt Ariho, Major Ogwang’s actions made it difficult for the Engineering Brigade to perform its duties effectively.

One example he mentioned was a project in Butambala District. Engineers worked to produce blocks worth UGX 100 million, but their efforts were dismissed as theft by Major Ogwang.

Engineers were allegedly fired without justification, creating fear and low morale among the team. Lt Ariho also pointed out that unpaid debts had added more challenges to their work.

In his letter, Lt Ariho thanked the CDF for his leadership but warned that selfish interests and harmful propaganda within the UPDF were damaging good people while promoting unworthy individuals.

He urged the leadership to make changes and reform the system to ensure fairness and accountability.

Lt Ariho’s note also included a personal plea to the CDF. He requested that his family, particularly his children, be cared for after his death. He also expressed his wish to be buried in his home district of Rukiga.

The UPDF has acknowledged the incident, with spokesperson Brigadier-General Felix Kulayigye confirming that the allegations in Lt Ariho’s note are being investigated. He described the situation as a tragic loss for the military.

Deputy Spokesperson Col Deo Akiiki also expressed deep condolences to Lt Ariho’s family and colleagues.

He emphasized that the UPDF is treating the matter with seriousness and is committed to uncovering the truth.

Lt Ariho’s suicide has sparked conversations about the well-being of soldiers and the management practices within the UPDF. His note is seen as a cry for accountability and change.
