“We Need a Prison Now” - Rubirizi Leaders Demand Action

“How can we have courts, police, and a State Attorney but no prison?” asked Silvester Agubanshongorera, the district chairperson.

Agubanshongorera expressed frustration over the current situation, which forces the district to transport prisoners 42 kilometers to Bushenyi.

“This is not just wasting resources; it is delaying justice for our people,” he explained.

The lack of a local prison has left many residents worried.

“We see police arrest people, but what happens next? Justice is slow because of the long distances involved,” said one concerned resident.

Agubanshongorera highlighted how the district had already allocated land for the Uganda Prisons Service to build a facility.

“We gave them the land, but instead of building a prison, they are farming on it! Why is this happening?” he questioned.

The chairperson admitted that this issue is affecting his reputation as a leader.

“People are blaming me, but this is beyond my control. I urge the Uganda Prisons Service to act now,” he said with a heavy heart.

The delay in building the prison is not just about inconvenience—it impacts people’s lives.

“Justice delayed is justice denied,” Agubanshongorera reminded everyone.

“This is about fairness and proper service delivery,” he continued.

“Our district has grown, and we need the right facilities to meet the needs of our people. We cannot keep transporting prisoners like this forever.”

Many residents have joined the call for action, saying the government must take their concerns seriously.

“We need justice to be served quickly and fairly. Building a prison here will help us achieve that,” another resident added.

Agubanshongorera called on all stakeholders to prioritize the construction of the prison.

“This is not just a building—it’s about justice, safety, and respect for our people. Let’s make it happen,” he said firmly.
